Extension of horizontal well at vertical direction shall depend on geological geo-steering technique. Orion’s special geo-steering tools and data interpretation software were successfully applied in the gas producing reservoir. Orion uses special geo-steering instrument to run real time measurement, analysis and interpretation of production bed status and drilling trajectory trend, thus to judge to develop 3D relationship between drilling trajectory and production formation, offering a guide to operation and secure passage of wellbores in production formations in most cases.

Before end 2013, Orion has designed and implemented horizontal well section geo-steering drilling for more than 210 multiple branches wells, drilling footage for CBM horizontal well was over 800,000 meters, and an average coal bed drilling encounter rate was greater than 90%. Maximizing area of control with minimum drilling footage
It was in a xxx block at Qinshui Shanxi province, a multiple branches horizontal well has the TVD 120 meters, which required avoiding coal mining face. With refined geo-steering engineering of horizontal well section and 10 days well drilling cycle, it had drilled 8 branches with production bed drilling footage of 4,888.00 m, the pure coal drilling footage was 4,878.00 m, production bed drilling coal encountering rate was 99.80% and the single well’s control area was 0.71 km2.

In the process of drilling, with DWM data acquisition and geological and logging data analysis, auxiliary 3D geological modeling software, Orion can accomplish long horizontal well sectional wellbore deployment in answer to sudden change of production bed dip angle, thinning out of heavy production bed, discontinuity and developed faults, etc.
